Research data Registry with Simon Porter - Wed 12th June 2013

Don't miss University of Melbourne’s Research data Registry with Simon Porter on Wednesday 12th June 10:00am NSW, Vic, Tas, Qld, (9:30am SA and NT) (8:00am WA) via GoTo Meeting - log-in details below...(places limited to 26).

Simon Porter, Project Manager of the University of Melbourne’s Research data Registry will show us under the bonnet of one of the largest portfolios of data capture projects funded within Australian Universities with over 1000 research data records in Research Data Australia.

From day one, the project was viewed as a new breed of administrative system that relied on connected information, rather than just another research silo. By leveraging the metadata around grants and publications it has been possible to deduce much of the contextual information around research datasets.

A tour of 'DataConnect' at the University of Adelaide with Cathy Miller - Wed 15th May 2013

Don't miss this tour of 'DataConnect' at the University of Adelaide with Cathy Miller on Wednesday 15th May 10:00am NSW, Vic, Tas, Qld, (9:30am SA and NT) (8:00am WA) via GoTo Meeting - log-in details below...(places limited to 26).

Research Data Librarian, Cathy Miller, will be taking us on a tour of DataConnect. DataConnect is a visible, institution-wide key feature of University of Adelaide's approach to research data management, where all researchers have access to an online form for self-registration of their datasets and data collections.

Cathy will explain why simplifying the functionality of DataConnect to the three concepts: Capture, Cite and Connect, is and has been important in promoting the new system and growing a culture that embraces University research data management tools and services.

'Claiming the Territory' - La Trobe University's Metadata Store with Roderick Sadler - Wed 8th May 2013

Don't miss this thoughtful presentation about the impact La Trobe University’s Metadata Store with Roderick Sadler on Wednesday 8th May 10:00am NSW, Vic, Tas, Qld, (9:30am SA and NT) (8:00am WA) via GoTo Meeting - log-in details below...(places limited to 26).

Following Carolyn Hulsbergen’s presentation into strategies for managing change, La Trobe University’s Institutional Repository Team Leader, Roderick Sadler has some profound insights into the impact of the university’s Metadata Stores Project and the cultural changes unleashed as the University Library becomes a publisher for the first time. He will discuss how La Trobe is helping researchers think about their data as something that can be published and how exposing research data is part of claiming the territory and gaining advantage for researchers as well as for the University.

Roderick will be explaining how La Trobe is future-proofing the architecture of its Metadata Store by using unique and durable identifiers as well as how they are using ReDBox to massage and then push data to their Vital Repository.

La Trobe’s Digital Infrastructure Manager, Simon Huggard and Research Data Co-ordinator, Charlie Ambrose will also be on hand to answer questions and expand on the significance of their project.

Strategies for Managing Change - with Carolyn Hulsbergen (Deakin) 17th April 2013

Don't miss this presentation about how to manage change in the research domain by Carolyn Hulsbergen (Deakin University) on Wednesday 17th April 10:00am NSW, Vic, Tas, Qld, (9:30am SA and NT) (8:00am WA) via GoTo Meeting - log-in details below...(places limited to 26).

As more Metadata Stores projects are completed or nearing completion, there is a greater appreciation that these projects are less about software development and more about change management.

Carolyn Hulsbergen is a Senior Business Analyst at Deakin University. She will be leading a discussion about what is changing, who needs to change and how Deakin has recognised that people and active sponsorship are the keys to success. Carolyn will describe in detail what Deakin is actually doing to change the culture of the research environment.

Presentation is expected to be 20-30mins with plenty of time for questions.

For background context, Deakin University has a simple schematic of their Metadata Store On A Page

'People do projects' - with Jon Hurn (UTas) and Maude Francis (UNSW) - Wed 20th March 2013

Don't miss these two quite different perspectives from Jon Hurn (UTas) and Maude Francis (UNSW) on Wednesday 20th March 10:00am (NSW, Vic, Tas) (9:00am Qld) (9:30am SA) (8:30 NT) (7:00am WA) via GoTo Meeting - log-in details below...(places limited to 26).

First. "Project plans don’t do projects - people do projects.” says Jon Hurn, the 4th Project Manager for University of Tasmania's TReDDS Metadata Stores project (MS12). Jon has been making rapid progress with the TReDDS (Tasmanian Research eData Directory Service) successfully uploaded party data to the test system and harvesting Tasmanian data collections. The project will support a discovery service for Tasmanian researchers – extended as a national and international service for Tasmania’s key scientific disciplines.

Please note, a video capture of this presentation is now available.

Second. Maude Francis will share some research use cases to demonstrate UNSW infrastructure for research data management and 'Mediated Deposit'. This includes sourcing party and activity data from the UNSW data warehouse, creation of metadata records in ResData (UNSW metadata store), and the generation of DOIs from ANDS Cite My Data. UNSW is also planning to integrate data management planning and reporting functionalities with dataset descriptions and data storage.

Presentations are expected to be 15-20mins with 10mins for questions.

Please note, a video capture of this presentation is now available.
